Dear List Members,

I would like to draw your attention to a new publication: The Division System in Crisis: Essays on Contemporary Korea, by Paik Nak-chung.
Although some of the essays contained in the book date to the late 1990s, it could not be more timely. Everybody's focus is now on what is happening in the north following Kim Jong-Il's death, but as Prof. Paik points out, as long as North and South remain locked in what he terms a 'divison system,' such events continue rather than alter the status quo. Whether or not you agree with his analysis, he provides some very thought-provoking statements on the fundamental issues that stand in the way of reunification.
The book is the second instalment of the Seoul-California Series in Korean Studies, a collaboration between the University of California at Berkeley and the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies (quite a mouthful!) and is published by the Univ. of California Press. To order copies, please follow this link:
http://www.ucpress.edu/book.php?isbn=9780984590919

The series is also unique in that the books are available as freely accessible e-books:

For more information on the series, please contact me off-list (for full disclosure: I am part of the advisory board of the series)
