I am writing a thesis which include artwork by contemporary Korean American
artists that utilize images and references to Queen Min. As a cross-
reference to popular culture, I wanted to know if there are Korean movies or
mini-series featuring the life and stories about Queen Min. I would like to
know if such examples from popular Korean culture exists.

There is/was of course the big musical The Last Empress.
Big in Korea, anyway. And in the US, I think?
In London it got some snide reviews, upsetting Koreans.
To a non-specialist the plot was unfamiliar and complex,
but I thought it was a terrific production.
Others on this list will know far more about this.
Perhaps it was just too early (late 90s) for the hallyu?

Korean musicals, incidentally, seem to be receiving a new
(economic, not necessarily artistic) boost from the hallyu
phenomenon. The Last Empress will travel to Beijing and
Shanghai this spring, and it will be marketed as part of the
overall Korean wave. At the same time, large numbers of
Japanese spectators have been coming to Korea to watch both
Korean musicals and Korean versions of Western musicals
(often with well-known stars in the lead roles). Quite a
few Korean musicals and Korean-produced Western musicals
will also be touring through Japan this year, including the
musical version of the TV drama Winter Sonata. A musical
version of Jewel in the Palace is scheduled to be ready by 2007.
(I have an article about this appearing in this coming
week's issue of Variety, and a search through the websites
of Korean newspapers will turn up more related articles)
Back to Queen Min, there will be a major film production
centering on the story of Queen Min that will open shooting
this summer. It's from what can probably be called Korea's
leading production company, Sidus FNH. There was also a
popular TV drama from 2001 with Lee Mi-yeon and a music
video. Here's a link to a news story (in Korean):

Best of luck,

There was also the television drama _Myo^ngso^ng Hwanghu_, which aired on
KBS TV between 2001 and 2002 and starred Ch'oe Myo^nggil as the eponymous
empress. (http://www.kbs.co.kr/end_program/drama/myungsung/index.html ).
For some reason, the "see again" link doesn't work from the main page, but

(Should be called "postview.html," I suppose....)
