Greetings,

I'm looking for information regarding the rank system
used by Choson's civil service and military. Both
"Sources of Korean Tradition" and Samuel Hawley's "The
Imjin War" mention it several times, but they do not
explain it or list all the ranks (though SKT does
explain Silla's bone rank system, which makes Choson's
absence stranger).

Thank you all,
Jong-Won Kim

Hi !

Try the APPENDIX (pp. 559-568):
Kim Tai-Jin (ed. and transl.). _A Bibliographical Guide to
Traditional Korean Sources_. Seoul: Asiatic Research Center, Korea
University, 1976.
This "List of Government Offices and Posts" gives all the offices in
Hanja, transcription and English translation.

With respect to the rank system in Choson you may also wish to consult the
appendix to Ed Wagner's classic book on the literatri purges, which contains
an outline of ranks and positions in the Choson government.

Wagner, Edward Willett. The literati purges : political conflict in early Yi
Korea. Cambridge, Mass.: East Asian Research Center, distributed by Harvard
University Press, 1974. (ISBN: 0674536185)

Beyond Birth: Social Status in the Emergence of Modern Korea, Kyung Moon Hwang
Published by the Harvard University of Asia Center, 2004

This book has an information on Choson's rank system that includes civil service and military, etc. A valuable perspective of analyzing the rank system you might find it insightful.
