The Center for East Asian Studies at Heidelberg University invites applications for the position of assistant professor/lecturer in Economy and Society of East Asia (Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft Ostasiens), with special emphasis on Japan and/or Korea. The successful candidate will contribute to the research at the Center and teach 4 hours per week during the semester. The search is open as to disciplinary specialization, though applications from scholars coming from economics, political economy, or political science are of particular interest. We prize scholars who generate premium academic research and use this to provide dynamic teaching. Working experience in a medium or large company would be a plus.
Requirements are an above-average PhD and fluency in English, Japanese or Korean, fluency in German is desired. Applications from candidates who are starting their PhD will also be considered if they are exceptionally strong. In this case, the position will be divided into two half-positions. The successful candidate is expected to contribute actively to raising the Center’s profile in the study of economic, political and social developments in contemporary East Asia. Successful candidates without fluency in German are expected to acquire sufficient command of the language to participate in administrative matters and undergraduate teaching within two years.

The Kyujanggak Insitute for Korean Studies would like to invite applications for its fall 2012 fellowships. The fellowships provide Korean Studies researchers with the opportunity to use the Kyujanggak collection as well as other resources at Seoul National University to carry out their research projects.

Two kinds of fellowships are available this time: – fellowship A: For researchers in Korean Studies affiliated with overseas universities; 3 to 4 months, monthly stipend, housing and airfare provided; fellows are expected to give a talk and submit a report upon completion of their fellowship – junior fellowship: for PhD students; 3 months, one-off 3 million KRW stipend provided.

The deadline for applications is May 10, 2012, and appointments should start in September or October 2012.

The Academy of Korean Studies(AKS) invites graduate students majoring in Korean Studies to apply for the new AKS Research Grant program.

1. Eligibility and Requirements
◦ Graduate students who are working on a thesis in the field of Korean studies at an overseas university or who have completed the required coursework (non-Korean citizens)
※ Korean citizens who has completed more than 16 years of education outside of Korea that is compatible with Korea’s elementary, middle, high school and college education can apply.
※ Applicant living in Korea during application period is not eligible to apply.

2. Grant Period
◦ 6 months (Applicant can extend the period of research grant for six months after the result of the Committee of the Graduate School.)

3. Grant Benefits
◦ Monthly Stipend : KRW 900,000
◦ Travel Allowance(Amount of economy class round trip air-fare)
◦ On-campus Accommodation is available at student’s own expenses(Shared room by two students: KRW 463,500/6 months)
◦ Access to AKS facilities including library
◦ Research Grant certificate will be issued to the researchers who have completed the program.

6. Notification
◦ Notification : Around the middle of June, 2012
◦ Successful candidates must arrive at the AKS by August 15, 2012.

7. Duty of researcher
◦ Researcher must designate the professor in GSKS as an academic adviser and take the independent studies with the professor’s permission or more than one major course that is related to the research thesis.
◦ Researcher must submit the final report and written evaluation of the academic adviser in GSKS before the departure of Korea.
◦ To publish the research papers (in book form), researcher must state the paper as ‘The outcome of the research performed with support of The Academy of Korean Studies’.
◦ Researchers are not allowed to work during the research period.
◦ The departure of Korea is available one week before the end of the program.
◦ As for other items not stipulated, researcher should abide by the rules of the AKS and the result of the Committee of the Graduate School.

8. Reference
◦ Monthly stipend is to be paid at the end of every month. But if the researcher give up and return home early, monthly stipend for the period of leave-of-absence from program will not be provided.
◦ Travel allowance is provided on the month of departure. But 50% of the travel allowance is to be paid to the applicant who gives up the program within 4 months. If applicant who extend the grant period gives up the program within 8 months, the same principle is applied.
◦ Monthly stipend and travel allowance can be confiscated if the Committee of the Graduate School decide to confiscate the support because of the researcher’s violation of obligations or other reasons.

College Lecturer in Korean

The University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a 3 year renewable full-time lectureship in Korean language (6 courses per year) beginning Fall 2012. The successful candidate will be prepared to offer courses in elementary, intermediate and/or advanced Korean language. The Korean language lecturer will play a vital role in our innovative learning model that accommodates the needs of students spread among the five campuses. A strong commitment to undergraduate teaching in language is expected.

The Korean language lecturer will be a joint appointee in the Five College Korean Language Program and will be based in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus. Joint appointees normally teach on more than one campus. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications: Native or near-native fluency in Korean and English. The academic field of specialization should be in a field of language education such as TESOL or linguistics and education. Ph.D. preferred, Master’s degree required as is at least one year of experience teaching Korean at a college-level institution. Silvia Lozeva – Short Bio

Silvia Lozeva is a PhD student in Sustainability at Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) Institute in Perth, Western Australia. Previously, she has pursued studies in Economics (B.A. in Economics 2001, University of National and World Economy) and Gender Studies (M. Phil.2006, Sofia University). In her doctorate The Nature of Migrant, Silvia examines the multi-fold role of contemporary migrants in the environmental movement in Australia from a feminist perspective. Silvia’s other research interests and experience lie within the field of science, technology and society. Silvia has participated in a nation-wide project of Desert Knowledge investigating the social effects of mining development in Australia, and more specifically examining the gender impacts of the resource-extracting industry.

Silvia’s interests span across the governmental and non-governmental sectors. She has a copious international experience (Australia, Bulgaria, Russia, Czech Republic, New Zealand and the UK) in both the governmental sector (Ministry of Fisheries, Wellington) and non-governmental sectors (Earthwatch Institute, Oxford). Silvia’s academic interest and research also includes a three-year comparative study on biomimcry in Western Australia and in Eastern Europe. She has been a guest lecturer on Bio/Ecomimcry on several occasions.

Silvia’s additional interests include radio-producing (Silver Medal Mark Time Award for best science fiction audio novel) .

Applications are invited for appointment as Assistant Professor in Korean Studies in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC), from July 1, 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter on a mutually agreed date, on a three-year fixed-term basis. This appointment is not on the tenure track.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree or equivalent that focuses on any aspect of Korean society, history, politics or culture by the date of appointment. The appointee will join the new, interdisciplinary Korean Studies program that is building from our existing Korean Language minor. Applicant should have a demonstrated capacity to develop and teach courses that explore Korea in an interdisciplinary mode and in the context of Korea’s increasing global impact and engagement. A willingness and capacity to teach courses that connect to at least one of the following would be favorably considered: (a) another of the School’s Area Studies programmes; and (b) the emerging programme in Global Creative Industries. Capacity to work in English and Korean is fundamental to the position. The successful candidate is expected to develop a vigorous, independent research programme, to excel in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and to participate in the administration of the program.

The program gives distinguished paper awards to authors of excellent research papers published in A&HCI, SSCI and SCI, and Scopus listed journals.

Korean Studies – Assistant Professor

The Comenius University (Bratislava, Slovakia) is a hiring an Assistant Professor with a Ph.D. in Korean Studies (or East Asian Studies with focus on Korea) starting from September 2012. The Department of East Asian Studies, Faculty of Philosophy, Comenius University (www.fphil.uniba.sk/index.php?id=4229) is launching a B.A. program (4 years) in Korean Studies. The candidate will teach in English. The teaching load will be about 5 lectures (90 minutes) per semester. Administrative work related to developing a Korean Studies program (M.A. program) and liaison work with Korean institutions, as well as research work will be expected. The initial appointment will be limited to 3-4 years with the possibility to prolong it.
